It’s been an eventful year for the Kardashians! Kim Kardashian gave birth to her first child, North West, on June 15, and is now engaged to longtime boyfriend, (and Nori’s dad), Kanye West. The 36-year-old rapper rented out AT&T Park in San Francisco to pop the big question on Kim’s 33rd birthday Oct. 21 — and who could say no to a 15-carat diamond ring from jeweler Lorraine Schwartz? While Kanye reportedly worked with the celebrity designer on the special ring, it looks so similar to the engagement ring he gave to Alexis Phifer when he proposed in August 2006.
Kanye and designer Alexis Phifer dated on and off in the early 2000s. In August 2006, Kanye popped the question, giving his wife-to-be a gigantic, square-cut Lorraine Schwartz sparkler, however, the couple never made it to the altar. The couple broke off their engagement 18 months later, in 2008.
As we all know, Kanye proposed to Kim with yet another Lorraine Schwartz sparkler, this time selecting a flawless, 15-carat cushion-cut diamond ring. While Kim and Kanye are both fans of the celebrity jeweler, some do think it’s odd that he would go back after getting his ex’s ring from the same designer — and that’s not the only reason it seemed weird! Kim was given a 20.5-carat Lorraine Schwartz ring by her ex-husband, Kris Humphries, when he proposed to the reality star.
